Narrative in film

Todorovs theory - He suggested that there is in film and equilibrium , where everything is normal. Dis- equilibrium when something has changed, gone wrong or is not right. New equilibrium when when a sense of normality is returned again.

Propps theory- Looked at hundreds of folk tales which appear in films, he identified :

1. The villian ( struggles against the hero)
2. The donor ( prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
3. The helper ( helps the hero in the quest)
4. The princess ( person the hero marries , fought for during the narrative)
5. Her father
6. The dispatcher ( The character who sends the hero off)

Narratives use many various techniques to show changes of time these include:
Elipsis
Parrellel narrative
Flash back / flash forwards
7. The hero or victim/seeker hero, reacts to the hero , weds the princess.

There are also alternative film structures this includes:
Exposition
Development
Complication
Climax
Resolution
